Mississippi & Louisiana Legislative Update

The Mississippi Legislature returned to Jackson Tuesday, Jan. 6 at noon to begin a four-year term.  Rep. Philip Gunn and Rep. Greg Snowden were re-elected as Speaker and Speaker Pro-Tem, respectively.  Lt. Governor Tate Reeves was sworn in to a second term, and Sen. Terry Burton was elected President Pro-Tem.

All committees have been named and committee chairmen have been selected ... so the framework for the next four years has been established.

We continue to review all bills which are important to the construction supplier industry.  We hope to see meaningful legislation which gives our members tax relief ... franchise tax and accelerated sales tax relief to be exact.

More to come as the session unwinds.

Next General Bill Deadlines:
Tuesday, Feb. 23 – 1st Committee Deadline
Thursday, March 4 – 1st Floor Deadline

The Louisiana Legislature convened January 11 for a brief organizational session, and  it will reconvene March 14 for Regular Session.  This session will adjourn June 6.  The 2016 Session will be a General Bill Session so an unlimited number of bills can be filed this upcoming year.

The Louisiana Legislature is currently in special session for a number of tax items that Governor Edwards has called to balance the state’s budget.  We will monitor this situation and keep you apprised of any bills which are harmful to the construction suppliers industry in LA.  A lot more to come here.
